Electraflyer.com a small company known for making electric powerplants for trike uptralights (wheeled hang-gliders with a motor), have just announced the successful conversion of a Moni Motorgliders to a small electric airplane, using off the shelf kit parts and their largest battery pack.
I see the EletraFlyer and the Taurus Electric glider as a emerging trend in personal aircrafts, as battery packs get more efficient flying time will continue to improve and these will become a very viable alternative to gasoline powered private panes. Already now fuel prices is quickly becomming big concern for owner-operators of private airplanes, a light plugin airplane offering around 2 hours of flight time could be a very successful product in this market.
It is interesting that most of the successful electric planes at this point is based on glider designs which by default is significantly more efficient air frames than the average Cessna private plane. The Taurus glider have a 40:1 glide ratio, meaning in smooth air the plane at 1 mile altitude over the ground will be able to glide for about 40 miles distance, this is about 4 times further than regular private planes, this efficiency naturally also makes it much easier on the batteries, as the plane can be kept airborne with much less power than the average private plane.
