Gulka presents the story of Kurmanjan Datka, the Kyrgyz woman who redefined the posibilities of a woman in the Kyrgyz society.
Kurmanjan was born In 1811 in the village Orok, next to Osh,. The nature itslef was forming the character of this not ordinary woman.
When she was 18 y.o. she was married to the son of Kurgabash-biy from the tribe of Kulseyit. Being far from her home, in Kashgar, next to unloved man, Kurmanjan was missing her home.
In less than a year of being married Kurmanjan made a decision to leave her husband and go back to her father's place. Once, on the back of horse, which was given to her as a gift she left Kashgar at night, riding through the mountains.
Finally she saw her native land. But everyone was surprised by her deed and even the elders didn't know what to do in that situation because it never had place in their lives. It was unbelievable! Everyone was shocked.
But the fortune itself was against her being with her husband.
In June, 1831 through the dusty Osh city, Alymbek (an outstanding ruler of Southern Kyrgyzes) was passing with his people. He was on his way to Alay.
When they reached Japalak (outside of Osh city) Alymbek saw a village with fantastic nature replete with flowers among of high green grass. He decided to have a rest in that village before continuing his way, so some of his guys went ahead to warn the inhabitants of the village.
His visit was a great honor for them so all elders were meeting him and they with a low bow invited Alymbek to the richest Yurt in the village. But the leader has chosen the nearest one, which was not as nice as the others, because he noticed some beautiful young woman there.
While they were treating Alymbek with dinner, he was looking for that young woman who touched his heart.
After they had dinner the elders were talking about their way of lives, what is happening there, some kind of report as he was a head of the whole Southern part of Kyrgyzstan. One of he elders suddenly remembered about Kurmanjan, how she left her husband and came back to her father. Alymbek said," so what? It means that her husband did return her to her family as there was something wrong with his wife. You now have to return him "Kalym""
-"He doesn't need Kalym, but he needs a wife": replied Kurmajan's father. "She run away from him and even when he came after her she refused to go back to her husband and now we have no idea what to do with her"
"And father did do to solve the problem?": asked the ruler
" Everything! Tried to talk with her, treated with a whip but all the same, she refused to go to her husband:", replied father.
Alymbek became red because of anger and said" What's going on? How can you take yourself as men after that? And what kind of girl is it if not her father nor husband can't rule her? Call her!: he ordered.
People rushed to find her. Suddenly Alymbek saw the woman whom he was looking for. It was she!
His anger disappeared when he saw Kurmanjan at the door and he asked with a soft voice (instead of ruff tone as he was going to): " So you are that disobedient Kurmanjan?"
Instead of answer the woman just did homage to Alymbek and her beautiful hair fell on her chest.
" They told that you are married for 3 years, is it true?" continued Alymbek"
"True" replied Kurmanjan.
"So why I can't see "elechek"? (kind of married women)
"Cause I was never a wife" she said.
The elders were whispering about how shameless she is.
"The wife should be in the Yurt of her husband instead of her father's Yurt, don't you know about it?: asked the ruler.
" And is Kulseyit is a man of marital age?" answered young woman.
It was shocking as for Alymbek so for elders.
"Woman!"-he said loudly, "do you know that you just humiliated man's honor and for the long tongue you might loose your head?
"I realize that but he is three times older than me, even older than my father, do you think he is a suitable couple for me? -she said.
"Maybe he looks old but his soul might be still young", said Alymbek
" But if I see that the horse halts, should I take it for a long journey?"-replied Kurmanjan"
The elders were mad at her, and Alymbek hardly could suppress a laugh (he loved such kind of people).
That night Alymbek decided to stay in their village, they invited a singer and he was entertaining Alymbek and his people.
"Do you like this song?"- asked Alymbek Datka.
"Yes"- said replied Kurmanjan,"and if Kulseyit would sing it for me, I'd never leave him and became a real wife for him."
"And what if I sing it for you?"
"It doesn't suit the ruler to sing the songs. He should rule, order..."
"Is it possible to have one's love with order? Do you really think that a ruler can not suffer as a the other people?"
"The ruler should always be strong", said Kurmanjan, "He should fight for love, he should conquer love as well as everything in this life."
Next day Alymbek made a decision to stay there for one more day. There was a holiday again and again the singer was entertaining the Bek and his people. When the singer was singing the song "Seketbai" (beloved) Alymbek asked Kurmanjan again "Do you like this song?"
"Every woman would like it"-she replied.
"And if I would sing it for you?"
"Songs are for singers, and power is for Beks."
"So you should know that he sings it for you because I ordered him."
Next day Alymbek-datka said that the woman should stay with her family and left for Alay.
In two months datka has sent the match-makers to Mamatbai asking for his daughter to marry.
Everyone in that ayil (village) was happy but elders, who said: "The disobedient woman who deserves to be punished has become Bek's wife!"
It was a great wedding lasted for many days.
One day Alymbek-datka was leaving his native lands again and gave to his wife a whip with a silver handle so she remembered him while he is far away.
Kumanjan said that she will take it on condition that if he get it one day he should ride straight home without delay...immediately and that she will not send it without a very serious reason. Bek gave his word and left.
One morning when Alymbek just woke up and went out to breath a bit he saw someone riding toward him. Without saying anything the rider gave a whip with silver handle, the one he gave to Kurmanjan before leaving. Alymbek recognized it.
"What happened?-asked Datka, "enemies? You have any messages from my wife?"
The rider said:"She ordered me to deliver you this whip and said that you know what to do"
Alymbek thought that he can't leave that place now cause he had very important things to do, but Kurmanjan would not send it if there was no a serious reason for that.
He said nothing, just sat on his horse and rushed after that rider who led him to his father's-in-low house.
"You are surrounded with enemies"-said Kurmanjan
"Whom do you mean?"
"Someone among your people"
Alymbek started laughing: "They are all here"-said Alymbek showing his fist. "What can do jackals to the lion?"
"...a lot I they are mad. A small snake's biting can kill a lion."
"You just confirmed the saying that woman's mind is shorter than her own hair"-said Alymbek.
Kurmanjan understood that there is no sense to argue with him. Keeping silence she gave him a cup of hot tea mixed with opium.
When bek fell asleep Kurmanjan ordered to take him to vehicle and they left Osh.
...When Alymbek woke up, he couldn't realize what had happened and where he was. Going out he recognized Alay-his motherland. Not far from his yurt he saw Kurmanjan cooking something.
On all his questions his wife said:
"Now you are at home, far from death"
"Which death you are talking about? I need to go back to Osh"
"Do you know that today is our anniversary? 14 years...Please stay for one more day. I have a present for you...very valuable."
"What is it?"
"You'll know tomorrow"
Alymbek thinking a bit said:"All right but only for one day"
Next day one of his people came from Osh with bad news. He reported about the investigation of the rulers of other districts whom Alymkul considered as his allied. They were looking for datka of Alay.
Shocked Alymbek looked at his wife asked
"Did you know about it?"
"I knew about the plot against you but How could I make you to believe me..."
"I have my own people-"eyes and ears"
"Why those "eyes and ears" did not come straight to me?
"It's easier to communicate with me" said Kumanjan smiling to him.
"You saved my life..."
"I promised you a gift, didn't I?"
"My general!"-said Alymbek hugging tight his wife.
After the bad news they got a good one. The messenger was sent from the other beks with a message that while Kipchaks are fighting there, there is a chance to occupy Osh and make him a ruler of it too.
"You see, it's not too bad"-said Alymbek.
"Maybe it's better to wait a bit, to check everything?"
"Time is tight. Woman, don't you know that you need to make a "step" in time if you want to win!"-said Alymbek and left.
In spring 1862 he had fell in battle.
